Jim Dow has been coming to North Dakota since 1981, first commissioned by the Museum to photograph folk art within the environment. By 2000 Jim’s directive was to shoot “whatever catches your fancy” while wandering the blue highways and dirt roads of North Dakota and its neighboring South Dakota and Minnesota. Three-hundred images later, the Museum has published Marking the Land: Jim Dow in North Dakota. Join us for the unveiling of the book, and the exhibition of photos, which “. . . eloquently summarize a deeply imaginative people and an astonishing landscape nearly invisible from our two coasts,” according to fellow photographer Emmet Gowin.
