Kristin Jonsdottir Fra Munkathvera

April 11 – May 18, 2003

Kristin Jonsdottir is an artist from Ejafjordur, Iceland, who currently lives and works in Reykjavik. Her textiles have been shown internationally in both Europe and North America. In 2001 Jonsdottir’s felt banners and wall pieces were included in A Scandinavian Sensibility: Contemporary Fiber Work by 15 Nordic Artists that was shown at the North Dakota Museum of Art. Calligraphy is a dominant presence in her art either on paper of embedded in felt. For example, a registry of the names of people who abandoned farms across Iceland is elegantly recorded in one of the large felt hangings. The names are all that remain as a record of their having inhabited the region.

Jonsdottir was invited to North Dakota as part of an exchange between North Dakota and Iceland. She worked in Cavalier Public School and at Carl Ben Eielson Elementary School on the Grand Forks Air Force Base. Her projects, Links Between Two Worlds, concern connections with nature, history and people’s lives from the time immigrants arrived in North Dakota from Iceland and neighboring Scandinavian countries. As part of the exchange, Laurel Reuter, Director of the North Dakota Museum of Art, curated an exhibition of artists from Iceland that opened in the Museum.
