Patrick Dougherty “Shelterbelt”

This North Carolina artist came to North Dakota in the fall of 1990 to create an installation for the exhibition Nature’s Materials. While traveling about the country looking for swamp willow he discovered the shelterbelts that define our flat landscape. Combining the materials with the metaphor resulting in gigantic nests reaching to the roof of the Museum. For the six weeks of the exhibition the Museum smelled wonderfully of our “nature’s materials.”
